The EU funded LoCoMoTion project has been collecting and disseminating information on low-cost techniques for producing Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) for the past 18 months. This project, led by Brian Mulligan from the Institute of Technology Sligo in Ireland, started the third delivery of it’s own MOOC, “Making MOOCs on a Budget” on the 18th of October, 2016. This MOOC explores the strategies and techniques for creating effective MOOCs on a budget. Many of these techniques can be extended to develop media rich resources for all online delivery formats.
To date, there has been limited interest from academics in actually building such low-cost MOOCs. This lack of interest and acceptance has been a puzzle worth exploring. In this COIL Conversation, Brian gives an overview of the techniques for low-cost production as well as invites participants to discuss the barriers that remain and how they might be overcome. For more information on the project and MOOC see moocs4all.eu.
Brian Mulligan has worked in higher education since 1984 and has been a leader both in the Institute of Technology Sligo, growing online distance learning to over 25% of the student body, and nationally as founder of the Irish Learning Technology Association. More recently he has been involved in the development of MOOCs in Sligo and as leader of the European funded LoCoMoTion project.
