Berklee College of Music was founded on the revolutionary principle that the best way to prepare students for careers in music is through the study and practice of contemporary music. Berklee Online, the online continuing education division of Berklee, has been teaching contemporary music and music-related studies online for 13 years. The mission of Berklee Online is to expand the reach of the college and provide music education opportunities to a global base of aspiring musicians. Over the years, Berklee Online has developed a diverse portfolio of online offerings, from FREE to degree, representing contemporary music and music-related studies. In 2012, after teaching more than 75,000 students online for a little over 10 years, Berklee became a MOOC partner institution with both Coursera and edX. In this COIL Conversation, Debbie Cavalier will focus on Berklee’s Institutional Strategies for MOOCs and how they address a number of strategic initiatives for the college including:

  1. Raising visibility for all of Berklee
  2. Providing readiness courses for prospective students
  3. Providing music education opportunities to international and underserved populations
  4. Providing a pathway of study to Berklee’s online certificate and degree programs
  5. Leveraging and maximizing music industry partnerships

Debbie Cavalier is Vice President for Online Learning/CEO Berklee Online and was part of the entrepreneurial leadership team that founded Berklee’s online school in 2002. Under her leadership, Berklee Online introduced the college’s first fully online Bachelor’s degree program. She also spearheaded the institution’s recent partnerships with MOOC providers Course and edX, and established a co-branded online MBA program between Berklee and SNHU. As a musician, Debbie leads the award-winning kids/family band Debbie & Friends, producing original cartoons and performing concerts throughout the U.S. Debbie composed and produced a song for the 2011 Grammy Award-winning CD for Best Children’s Album. She is a frequent presenter for topics such as leadership, distance learning, and arts education online.
